1.  Betalbatim Beach, Goa

However, Goa offers a lesser-known attraction that adds to the state’s abundant natural beauty; a glow-in-dark beach – the Betalbatim Beach. This beach offers a majestic view of sunshines & sunsets along with dolphins here and there. The beach is best known as the ‘glowing beach’ of Goa for the presence of bioluminescent algae in its waters that illuminate the shoreline at night.

2.   Purushwadi Forest, Maharashtra

Purushwadi is a small tribal village in Akole Taluka, Maharashtra. A moonless night, a beautiful forest, and 1000s of fireflies make it a dream out of a fantasy movie. The village attracts millions of fireflies and 1000s of tourists every summer –May & June. You can expect a stunning show in this period, for there are more than 2000 species of fireflies that put on their mating lights. 1000s of fireflies can be seen in trees as they strive to seduce their mates.

Every year in June a Firefly Festival is held in the woods of Purushwadi village where tourists can witness the beauty of these fireflies in their dazzling glory.

3.  Bangaram Island, Lakshadweep

Located in the Arabian Sea, Bangaram is a tiny teardrop-shaped island and is a part of the Lakshadweep cluster of islands. The most striking feature of this only uninhabited island resort in Lakshadweep is the bluish-white glow that the sea waves start emitting during nightfall. It is quite a sight to witness. The algae and other aquatic animals such as jellyfish in the water get washed up to the edges of the water during high tide and glow like jewels during the night.

4.  Ahupe Village, Maharashtra

A small forest in the tribal Ahupe village on the Western Ghats, near the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary, is where the woodlands come alive after sunset. During monsoon, the forest lights up due to a bacterium called Mycena, which has the unique ability to light up when they are exposed to too much moisture. The fungus grows on the forest’s damp decomposing barks, leaves, and roots making everything glow. Visit the place during the monsoon and you will be able to get this breathtaking view.

5.  Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary, Goa

Located in the North Goa district and home to Bengal Tigers too, this sanctuary is a protected sanctuary. You can find glowing mushrooms, in the forests, that grow on decaying logs, twigs, and stumps. The area of the sanctuary is thick forests with some evergreen species of vegetation, and the most fascinating part is that the sanctuary is home to glow-in-the-dark mushrooms during the monsoon season. The sanctuary can be visited during monsoons to witness a dreamy green landscape covered with glowing mushrooms.

6.  Mattu Beach, Karnataka

Located in Karnataka, Mattu beach is a very secluded beach. With a pristine beach and cool palm trees, this beach is a hidden paradise. Mattu Beach is another beach that sparkles beautifully at night. During the night the sea lits up as a mesmerizing blue on every wave. Commonly known as the sea sparkle, which is a free-living marine-dwelling species that emit light when disturbed.

7.  West Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya

The place is home to the major tribes of Meghlaya popularly known as ‘Jaintias’, believed to be the remnants of the first Mongolian overflow into India. When researchers went to West Jaintia Hills district upon hearing about the ‘electric mushrooms’, the local guide asked them to switch off their torches. They were amazed to see tiny mushrooms that grew on dead bamboo sticks and emitted light on their own. What is fascinating about this place is the presence of ‘electric mushrooms’ which were so bright at night that the locals began using them as natural torches. Another significant feature is that the mushrooms were found growing only on dead bamboo.
