Bhagwad Gita - The Destroyer Of All Accumulated Sins

“Reading Bhagwad Gita faithfully and regularly not only purifies mind & soul but also gives us the strength to face uncertainty & failures. On the other hand, it makes us polite and humble at the time of success.”

Bhagwad Gita also known as Gitaopnishad is unique in the sense that no other Vedic or western culture has God Himself speaking. It is actually a dialogue between Lord Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead to His intimate disciple, Arjuna, on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. When Arjuna was confused about whether to battle with his family members just for the sake of the kingdom and had many questions in his mind; at this time Lord Krishna guides him with his teachings on the battlefield itself.

The 700 concise verses provide a definitive guide to the science of self-realization. Critical problems in life like disease, accident, loss, dead, luck, health, wealth, success, failure, etc. is the result of good Karma ( Punya) of not only this birth but also of past many births. We may commit sinful activities - sins arising from offensive behavior, or offensive speech, eating forbidden things, and sinful activities incited by the senses. But Lord Krishna gives us as assurance that He will save us from the effects of all sinful reactions “aham tvam sarva papebhyo mokshaishyami”.

Almost everyone I interact with regarding Bhagwad Gita agrees that one should read this Holy Scripture at least once. Many of them admit that one should follow the teachings of Gita, but only a handful of them are able to recognize the real purpose of Gita.

Listing below a few Benefits of reading Bhagwad Gita daily:

1.  Bhagwad Gita helps in controlling our minds efficiently:

Bhagwad Gita highlights the significance of mind control and what havoc can be caused if we fail to do so. Our mind is constantly producing various desires for pleasure & control, all of which cannot be fulfilled practically. We keep on chasing these desires and if we do succeed in achieving some of these, then we do get infested with pride, arrogance, greed, fear of losing what we have gained; and we if fail to fulfill these desires then depression, anxiety, lamentation follows. Gita offers a solution to all for this. It teaches us that our entire universe revolves around its Creator, hence what we are or we have is God’s gift to us and whatever we achieve using these gifts should be offered to the Lord in return. There is absolutely no space for greed and pride in life.

2.  Provides knowledge of  the Soul:

Lord Krishna in Bhagwad Gita calls the soul eternal, unborn, very old, indestructible, cannot be killed, etc.- Chapter 2, Verse 23. According to the Holy Book, the soul temporarily occupies a body, and when the body dies, it simply gives it up and occupies a new body. In Chapter 2, Verse 22, Lord Krishna compares this change of the material body with discarding or giving up old garments and putting on new ones.

3.  Teaches us the right Karma:

Lord Krishna gave these directions to Arjuna while on the battlefield. Bhagwad Gita says that once a soul is given a material body, it is forced to act in order to maintain righteousness and conduct during its life span. The Holy Book classifies these activities as ‘Karma’ (Morale and lawful actions producing positive reactions), ‘Vikarma’(Sinful actions producing negative reactions), and ‘Akarma’( actions that produce no reactions), and it further explains that a soul gets a particular type of material body as per his/her fruits of past Karma. This is called the cycle of birth & death and Bhagwad Gita offers a solution and facilitates our escape from this vicious cycle.

4.  Paves the way to Spirituality:

Lord Krishna introduces Himself as the Supreme personality. He says that the entire material creation is His expansion or His energy. He is the father of all entities. He further admits that He acts as a judge giving rewards and punishments to people depending on their ‘Karma’. Therefore, once you understand that you are a part of the Lord Himself. This feeling will fill you with positive energies and you will eventually walk the path of spirituality.

5.  Establishes Peace within yourself to practice Devotion:

The first verse of Bhagwad Gita, Chapter 7 explains that the goal of human life is to ‘surrender’ through the process of Bhakti or Devotion. When a soul sincerely starts following the process of Devotional Service, his life takes a new turn and this is manifested in many ways, including peace of mind, and purity of thoughts & desires. One can attain a consistently peaceful and blissful devotion by chanting and participating in the service of the Lord.

6.  Transcends emotions and attend duties:

Most of the time we are swept by our own emotions and tend to neglect our duties & responsibilities. Emotions keep changing, but neglecting duties has unpleasant consequences. Performing actions & duties without worrying about the results are the secret to getting rid of from worries. Bhagwad Gita emphasizes the truth and this helps in attending to the responsibilities.

7.  Get rid of ignorance through knowledge:

Bhagwad Gita gives us the skill to come out of our ignorance and leads us to the path of knowledge. Only through self-knowledge, one can be truly happy in this ever-changing world.

8.  Inner strength:

Bhakti or Devotion is the easiest way to reach the Divine Lord or God. With faith & trust, one gets the inner strength that gives the power to face any situation. Lord Krishna explains that we get empowered with inner strength and have the ability to face any situation.

9.  Acts like a Guru and provides the guidance of life(spirituality):

“Learn the Truth by approaching a spiritual master”. The seeker needs someone who can help in getting away with the illusions of mind and progress in the path of knowledge. Bhagwad Gita acts like a guru and provides guidance for a happy life.

10. Transcends the opposite:

Our mind is caught up in opposite values such as good-bad, right-wrong, and so on. In Bhagwad Gita, Lord Krishna explains how one’s conscience is pervading all over and all opposites are nothing but one’s consciousness. By pondering on the absolute, one can easily transcend the opposites.

11. Teaches us the Importance of Karma:

Karma’ is a word meaning “the result of a person’s actions as well as actions themselves”. ‘Karma’ also means ‘action’- a person has to perform his/her duties, sacred duty (dharma). Many times we keep worrying about our problems but do not get into action. The way to perform your duty is even more important. It is common to do the right thing because we fear the consequences of not doing so, also because we are motivated by the desire for the good consequences that come back to us from the performance of our duty. In Bhagwad Gita Lord Krishna gives tips to Arjuna on how to perform self-satisfaction. By using these tips we can lead a life with peace and harmony.

12. Meditation and Yoga:

Lord Krishna has talked about the importance of yoga and meditation and how they can help us in experiencing the inner peace & joy. In the present era we are all directly or indirectly on a battlefield, fighting with each other; sometimes for ego, sometimes for pleasure, so much so that there are situations where we even don’t know for whom we are fighting. The most constant and horrible fight is between Dharma & Karma, mind & soul. But Bhagwad Gita teaches us that Yoga & Meditation are a medium to seek out this problem.

Indeed, this message comes from  Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 2, Verse 47 , where Lord Krishna advises Arjun to focus on his duty without attachment to the results. This profound teaching emphasizes the importance of  selfless action  and is central to the philosophy of  Karma  Yoga  — performing one’s duty without ...
